Jacqueline McClaran, from the Department of Family Medicine, was recently appointed to the Board of Directors of the Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation. The 19-year-old violinist was co-concertmaster at the recent joint performance of the Montreal and McGill Symphony Orchestras and won first prize and interpretation prize at the Montreal Symphony Orchestra Competition.ĭr. Jonathon Crow, a student in the Faculty of Music, was named by the Montreal Mirror as one of its "Noisemakers" for 1997-a group of Montrealers who are expected to make a name for themselves in the year ahead. Professor George Demopoulos, from the Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering, was the Plenary Lecturer for the Third International Conference on Clean Technology for the Mining Industry, held in Santiago, Chile, in May 1996. Professor John Gruzleski, from the Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering, received the Best Paper Award of the Aluminum Division of the American Foundrymen's Society. Professor Malcolm Scoble, from the Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering, was the recipient of the Distinguished Lecturer Award of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Professor Robin Drew, from the Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering, won the Best Paper Award at the 19th Annual Conference on Composites, Advanced Ceramic Materials and Structures. A composer, conductor and pianist, lanza is the long-time director of McGill's Electronic Music Studio. Professor alcides lanza, from the Faculty of Music, has been awarded the 1996 Diploma of Honour with highest distinction from the Organization of American States and the InterAmerican Music Council. McGill's solar car, Northern Sun, missed a second place finish by a mere four minutes after completing a 3,010 kilometre, nine-day race across the Australian outback in November. Michael Greenish, a student in mechanical engineering, led a team of student engineers to a third-place finish in the University Challenge portion of the World Solar Challenge-the best- known solar car race on the planet. Eu, from the Department of Chemistry, has been elected to the Korean Academy of Science and Technology. The prizes are in recognition of their fine work on the education of gifted children. Bruce Shore, from the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology, earned Awards of Excellence from the American Mensa Educational and Research Foundation and International Mensa Inc. Julie Payette, a PhD student in the Centre for Intelligent Machines, was selected by the Canadian Space Agency to train as a Mission Specialist for a possible future flight aboard one of NASA's space shuttles.ĭr.
